“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, but in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make straight your paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6
For me, August has always felt like a season of transition. Has it for you?
Across the Space Coast and around the country, families are preparing children for a new school year, teachers are getting their classrooms prepared, and routines begin to replace the slower pace of summer. At the same time, our military community is finishing one of its busiest seasons. Permanent Change of Station moves present new neighbors while longtime friends depart for their next assignment.
Also, military members retire after years of faithful service, commands welcome new leaders, and organizations across the military community begin fresh chapters.
Change can be exciting, but it can also be unsettling.
Every new beginning brings unanswered questions and an exploration into the unknown.
Will this school year go well?
Can I trust this new leader?
What does retirement look like?
Will our family adjust after this move?
These questions remind us of a timeless truth: we all need guidance.
The good news is that God has never intended for us to navigate life’s transitions alone. His invitation is not simply to make better decisions, but to walk closely with Him as He directs our path.
Proverbs 3:5–6 offers one of Scripture’s clearest promises: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, but in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make straight your paths.”
The passage does not promise an easy path. Instead, it promises a guided path.
This was the theme verse when I taught at Merritt Island Christian School before pastoring at King Street Baptist Church.
Little did I know, this verse laid the foundation for a new chapter in my life—a new chapter that led me on a path to meeting my bride just a few months after beginning the school year.
It’s still up for debate who made the first move, but regardless, I am glad He made my path straight.
Too often we ask God to bless the direction we’ve already chosen. Scripture teaches something different. We are first called to trust Him, surrender our understanding, acknowledge His presence, and then faithfully follow where He leads.
Begin with God’s Word
Do you want this kind of guidance? First, begin with God’s Word.
The Bible is more than an ancient collection of stories; it is God’s living, breathing voice speaking truth into today’s decisions.
Before making significant choices, ask yourself, what does Scripture say? God’s wisdom often provides clarity long before circumstances do.
Grow through prayer
Guidance also grows through prayer.
Prayer is not merely presenting God with a list of requests. It is a conversation that shapes our hearts until our desires begin to align with His. I used to say this from the pulpit repeatedly: we must drop our preferences and live in God’s priorities.
Sometimes the greatest answer to prayer is not an immediate solution but the peace to keep taking the next faithful step.
Walk with God’s people
Finally, God frequently guides us through His people.
No one is called to follow Christ in isolation. Wise parents seek counsel from experienced parents. Young professionals benefit from trusted mentors. Military leaders grow by listening to seasoned chiefs, senior enlisted advisors, and officers who have faithfully walked before them.
Retirees find encouragement from others who have successfully navigated life after military service—probably on the golf course or pickleball court!
New command teams flourish when they seek wisdom rather than assuming they already possess it.
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly uses a faithful community to confirm His direction.
On the Space Coast, we understand the importance of guidance. Before every launch, thousands of careful calculations are made. My grandfather, Loyd “Sonny” Parker, lived his life with this approach as the Range Safety Officer at NASA.
Teams work together, systems are checked repeatedly, and no mission succeeds through guesswork alone. In much the same way, our spiritual lives flourish when we allow God to direct each step rather than relying solely upon our own instincts.
As new school years begin, military families settle into unfamiliar communities, and new leaders assume positions of responsibility, perhaps the greatest prayer we can offer is simple:
“Lord, lead me.”
His direction may not always come as quickly as we would like, but His faithfulness never fails. The God who has guided His people throughout history continues to guide ordinary people through extraordinary seasons of change.
So, wherever August finds you—whether packing boxes, unpacking memories, stepping into a new classroom, assuming new responsibilities, embracing new leaders, beginning retirement, or simply wondering what comes next—remember that God’s guidance is available to all who seek Him.
Trust Him completely.
Seek Him daily.
Read His Word.
Walk faithfully with His people.
He already knows the path ahead.
A Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being our faithful Guide through every season of life.
Give us wisdom through Your Word, peace through prayer, and encouragement through the people You place around us. May we have the courage to trust in You with all our heart.
Lead us one step at a time, reminding us that Your plans are always good and Your presence never leaves us. May our confidence rest not in our own understanding but in Your unfailing love.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
